Van Rensselaer is a surname of Dutch origin.

In the Netherlands, the name was originally written with lower case v (i.e. "van"); common American usage is to write it with a capital V (i.e. "Van"). The Van Rensselaer family were landowners in colonial New York, and many members of the family have been active in politics and in the military.
