Alexander Henry the Elder
Hello, I am a descendant of Alexander Henry the Elder's family and Matthew Henry a Reverend has been sourced in several academic publications as being related to Alexander Henry the Elder. I am attempting to trace the Henry family England connections thru Matthew. I just want to know if you know anything more than they were related, How are they related, cousins, or granduncle etc. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.92.49.236 (talk) 01:39, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- Everything "we" (fellow readers and contributors to Misplaced Pages just like you) know is in the article. You might be able to get further relevant information from the sources cited in the article listed in the References section as well as the list under External links. Two of my questions weren't answered at the reference desk
I'm sorry to bring this up here but Two of my questions weren't answered at the reference desk. Is this appropriate place to bring this up? Venustar84 (talk) 03:29, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- Only if it's about Misplaced Pages. This page is only for questions about how to use or edit Misplaced Pages. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:34, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

If there is place on[REDACTED] where I can ask my questions to be answered properly efficiency and right away? Venustar84 (talk) 04:20, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- No. We're all volunteers here, so you take your chances. If you expect immediate answers to your questions, you need to go to a site where you pay the responders. I count 27 questions you've asked on the Ref Desk, so if 25/27 were answered to your satisfaction, that's a darn good result. StuRat (talk) 04:21, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- What two questions? Venustar84 is an admitted sockpuppet. μηδείς (talk) 04:28, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
Don;t worry about Medis. I'll ask the questions about on the reference desk. It's not important. Venustar84 (talk) 04:33, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
How does one withdraw or request a tainted RfC be closed early?
I posted a neutrally worded RfC and a hostile editor added a comment to a separate discussion to which I had been party saying that the discussion from that thread was continued at the RfC I filed, even though the matter was not discussed there. Four of the subsequent five opposes then mentioned the prior discussion the op linked to but which was not a subject of or mentioned at the RfC. How do I close the tainted RfC? Thanks. μηδείς (talk) 03:58, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- You can use my name in public. It's OK. --Jayron32 05:31, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- Instructions on closing RfCs can be found at Misplaced Pages:RFC#Ending RfCs. If this is an RfC/U then you'll have to follow this instead. The issue of taint (forum shopping, meatpuppetry, or whatever your concern is) is probably best resolved by simply mentioning this concern in the RfC itself and then definitely seeking outside closure at WP:AN/RFC. The closing admin will certainly take that into consideration. -Thibbs (talk) 14:53, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
Requesting an article?
So there's a page that says a person can suggest something be added to Misplaced Pages but the only link I can see is to create an article so I'll suggest it here.
I think an article needs to be made about Dr. Carin Bondar who is a biologist in Canada that does incredible learning videos and articles. Some of her stuff can be found at www.carinbondar.com/
Thanks and I absolutely LOVE Misplaced Pages.

Guinness nit
AFI's 100 Years...100 Movie Quotes
No. 8 is incorrect - the actor is Sir Alec Guinness.
Also, the tabulation is incorrect. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 219.92.32.129 (talk) 06:55, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- The list in the article is from the AFI list, and AFI attributes the quote to Han Solo so that's what stays in the article. You can see the discussion on the article's talk page. May the Force be with you says the line is spoken by several film characters, so I guess AFI chose the Han Solo version. RudolfRed (talk) 07:03, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
Edits do not trigger default edit summary
Why do my edits such as this one not leave an edit summary saying new section such as is the case for example here? -- Toshio Yamaguchi 08:17, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- You can create the section part of the edit summary on your own by entering "/* Section name */ this is what I did in the section". This is automatically filled in for you if you edit using a section link. If you create a new section at the end of the page using the "+section" link, you automatically get the edit summary "/* Section name */ new section". If you create a new section by editing the page an manually entering "== Section name ==", then this obviously doesn't work. You could be doing other things in addition, e.g. adding several new sections. The software doesn't inspect your changes to check if you just added a new section. Hans Adler 09:01, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- When you start a new section in a talk page you will not be able to leave a custom edit summary but it will be automatically added. --Ushau97 09:07, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

- Following PrimeHunter's suggestion, I clicked on New section, added "foo" to the "Subject/headline" field, selected "show preview" button, and saw "Subject/headline preview: (→foo: new section)." -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 13:54, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, that's how "
/* foo */ new section
" renders in an edit summary. This can be checked by entering it as a manual edit summary when not using the New section link. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:14, 15 February 2013 (UTC)- I am confused. When I click the New section link, I get no field for an edit summary at all and in the page history it doesn't say new section. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 15:00, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

- The section created in this edit is created by substituting {{User:Toshio Yamaguchi/Template:Original uploader NFCC concerns message}}. Does that mean I cannot provide an edit summary for these edits when using the New section link at the top of a talk page? Note that I do not give that section a heading, as the heading is automatically supplied by the substituted template. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 16:19, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- A heading made inside the edit box by typing or substituting is not transferred to the edit summary. But there should be a field with heading "Subject/headline" above the edit box when you click "New section". See for example File:Sandbox edit new section.PNG. Are you saying you don't have that field? Which skin are you using? PrimeHunter (talk) 16:43, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

If you want a default summary, you'll need to remove the heading from your template and enter it manually into the section header. Alternatively, you can use the normal edit window or the section above and leave an edit summary. Finally, I think there's an option in your preferences which will autofill the edit summary with what you posted if you don't have one. (I'm not totally sure on that one, talk to Kiefer.Wolfowitz, I know he uses it. Ryan Vesey 17:02, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

User talk page issues
My computer has developed a strange issue with user talk pages. It starts to load the page and then it looks like it restarts and hangs with the progress bar at ~30%. If I refresh the page in the middle of this hangup, it does the same thing. If I try over an over (maybe 15-20 times in a row) then it seems to break its pattern and it works, but if I refresh the page again, it's back to the annoying hangup again for another 15-20 tries. I haven't been able to find any info on this weird problem online, and I know there are things I could try like reinstalling my browser, but I'm just curious about what is going on here. So I'm looking for help from people with a technical understanding of the page code for Misplaced Pages. What makes user talk pages any different from all other pages on Misplaced Pages? Is this some kind of javascripting error? -Thibbs (talk) 15:05, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- It may be a caching issue. Have you tried a WP:BYPASS?--ukexpat (talk) 15:07, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- I hadn't tried that before, but I've just gone through all the steps and it still seems to be causing the same problem. I'd imagine that would affect my ability to load up other pages too, though. This problem is definitely restricted to user talk pages and only at Misplaced Pages. There must be something specific to this kind of page that my computer doesn't like. -Thibbs (talk) 15:22, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- OK next step - do you have any gadgets or scripts installed that work only in user talk space? If you do, you should try disabling them one by one to see if any of them, or a combination of them, is the culprit.--ukexpat (talk) 15:48, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- Or start by logging out and see if it works then. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:03, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- I didn't knowingly get any gadgets/scripts that are specific to user talk pages, but I do have greasemonkey and I pick up gadgets occasionally when I need them. I haven't ever gotten anything specific for Misplaced Pages, though, as far as I know. Interestingly it does seem to be connected to me being logged in, though. If I'm logged out a hungup user talk page can be refreshed and it works fine. -Thibbs (talk) 16:20, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- Well I am all out of ideas. Maybe the regulars at WP:VPT can help.--ukexpat (talk) 16:24, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

- What is your skin? Does it happen at other MediaWiki sites, for example, meta:? PrimeHunter (talk) 16:37, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- I've never changed skins so my skin is whatever the default is. And it seems not to be a problem at meta. I randomly tested the German Misplaced Pages too and no problems there. So it seems to be restricted to en.wikipedia. -Thibbs (talk) 17:13, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- The skin is shown at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering. The default is Vector. What is your browser? Can you test what happens if you disable Javascript in the browser? Special:PrefixIndex/User:Thibbs/ shows no personal css or js files, except an empty monobook.js. Maybe you have a problematic gadget at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:12, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- My skin is Vector, and the gadgets I have turned on are:
- 1. "Ask a question" feature
- 2. Reference Tooltips
- 3. Hotcat
- 4. Form for filing disputes at the dispute resolution noticeboard
- 5. CharInsert
- 6. Add a "Sandbox" link to the personal toolbar area.
- As with the skin, this is just the default gadgets that presumably are ticked for anyone who doesn't go into the gadget area. I'm using Firefox 3.6.28 (can't get the most current version since this is the last one compatible with Mac OSX 10.4.11). Interestingly I find that turning Javascripting off does fix the problem. So that may be the best workaround for me for now.
- Another quirk I just realized is that this problem has really only come up for me when I'm trying to place a warning tag on a vandal's talk page. As I think about it, it's not just any user talk page that I have trouble with, it's particularly user talk pages of IP editors. If they have no talk page (i.e. it's redlinked) then I can create one with no problem, but if they have a bluelinked talk page then it seems to hang. -Thibbs (talk) 00:23, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, those are the default gadgets. I don't have problems with them with Vector and Firefox 18.0.2 on Windows Vista. They use Javascript. You could try disabling them. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:48, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

I just tried disabling them each one at a time to see if I could identify a single one that was causing the problem, but no luck. Then I tried disabling them all in a single test and that still didn't work. I assume it's just because I'm using an outdated version of Firefox on this machine and that's causing the javascript to break. And actually with all of these various tests I've been running the problem seems to be marginally better. It only seems to be hanging around 50% of the time now. Things seemed to get better like this after I set my cache to 0M. Anyway thanks for your help on this. -Thibbs (talk) 05:35, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

Standardizing Misplaced Pages Usage of Princess Elizabeth
I've had a discussion today with another editor at this link with respect to standardizing Misplaced Pages usage as to how Elizabeth I is to be referred to in Misplaced Pages articles during the years 1536-1558. As I noted in my comments, almost every modern historian refers to her as 'Princess Elizabeth' during this period, as do very authoritative sources such as the Calendar of State Papers . Is there somewhere on Misplaced Pages where a discussion can take place and consensus can be reached on a topic such as this so that there isn't a discrepancy among the many Misplaced Pages articles which mention her, with some referring to her as 'Princess Elizabeth' and others as 'Lady Elizabeth'? NinaGreen (talk) 20:52, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- I, the other editor, noted in my comments that authors who have been knighted for their work on this matter (if we are going to use argumenta ad verecundiam) explicitly say that Elizabeth was no longer a princess after 1536 and that it was high treason to imply otherwise. The fact that she was not a princess anymore was of great significance, which is what the authors also explain in great detail. Anyway, I suggested a compromise - referring to Elizabeth simply as Elizabeth, which is plain, simple and accurate. However, this was flatly refused and no reason was given. Surtsicna (talk) 21:29, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- I'm hopeful someone at the Help Desk can indicate where on Misplaced Pages discussion of this topic can properly take place among a number of editors, and consensus can be reached as to the way Elizabeth I should be referred to during the period 1536-1558 in the many Misplaced Pages articles which mention her during that period, i.e. 'Princess Elizabeth', 'Lady Elizabeth', or just plain 'Elizabeth'. There needs to be consistency among Misplaced Pages articles so that readers aren't confused. I'm sure there must be someplace on Misplaced Pages where discussion takes place about the 'style' to be used when referring to royalty and members of the nobility. I'm just not sure where it is. NinaGreen (talk) 23:35, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- How about Misplaced Pages talk:WikiProject English Royalty or the talk page of a related WikiProject?--ukexpat (talk) 01:55, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for the helpful suggestion. I'll post something on the English Royalty Talk page. NinaGreen (talk) 18:06, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
Removing page do to lack of reference.
Hello, It was brought to my attention that some of my content under the title, Tadahiko Mizuno, did not have the required supporting references. I have subsequently listed references supporting the content.
Currently it is proposed for deletion however I trust the supporting information will satisfy your needs for the removal of this notice.
Could you please confirm? Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Scientistssupporter (talk • contribs) 20:59, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
- What makes you say it is currently proposed for deletion? A proposed deletion was declined last week after 16 minutes. I don't see anything since then. If you refer to User talk:Scientistssupporter#Proposed deletion of Tadahiko Mizuno then it's from the same declined proposal last week. Such notices are not removed from user talk pages – unless you do it yourself, but there is no need to. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:22, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

Fairy tales.
There is a nice bunch of authors creating articles based upon fairy tales written in the 19th century, at least twenty of them. I think these people need a bit of guidence and tidying up. Some of the articles are here on User_talk:Clevermammoth

- I looked at The Heart of Princess Joan noted above under Stories of Mary de Morgan and it seems well referenced. Can you be more specific as to what guidence the Heart of Princess Joan editors need and what tidying up the Heart of Princess Joan article needs? -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 14:10, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
Nuru
Hi, I would like to amend the content of this page: Nuru (massage). All my corrections have been deleted. Here are the explanations:
1. Nuru is a brand for a massage gel and not a massage technique. Active registration: https://www.swissreg.ch/srclient/faces/jsp/trademark/sr30.jsp
2. The word does NOT originates from the Japanese language and does NOT mean slippery: http://translate.google.com/#ja/en/nuru
3. Nuru is not a massage oil. It is a brand for a massage GEL. Oil is better for massaging purposes and keeps your skin greasy. Gel is easily washable and not so good for massage purposes.
4. External Links: The indicated link is pure commercial and should not be in an encyclopedia. These people abuse our brand. Please cancel it.
Conclusion: Please amend the content or delete the whole topic. Thanks. Adrianme (talk) 01:44, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
- It looks like you are attempting to use Wikiepedia to promote your product, the gel, which just happens to have the same name as the technique, and that is not permitted. You may very well own a trademark registration for your product in a particular class or classes of goods but that does not give you any rights over the generic term. In any event the article does not have a single reference and only a single external link of dubious usefulness, so unless references can be found it is probably heading for deletion.--ukexpat (talk) 02:16, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
- Don't engage in an edit war. If an editor reverts your changes, don't put it back. Instead, discuss it on the article's talk page. See WP:BRD. You've already been given explanations on why your changes were undone on your talk page. RudolfRed (talk) 02:39, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

Did I do this move correctly?
There was an article, The psychology of film. A student blanked the page, wrote some new notes, and then moved the article to Dual-route hypothesis to reading. I discovered this, restored the version that existed before blanking, but discovered that the move was not undone. I tried to undo the move, failed, and manually moved the article back to The psychology of film. Now Dual-route hypothesis to reading had got an automatic redirect to The psychology of film which I erased and replaced by a sentence. I also wiped out the redirect of the talk page. Now I know that moving pages can be a bit tricky, so my question is, is everything as it should be or are there things left to be fixed? (Next time I'll undo the move before I revert to a previous version...) Lova Falk talk 10:51, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

Karen Harup
This:
"Death

Is it possible for someone to delete the chapter?

Joe Paterno page
ResolvedPlease consider changing the content of is page. It is based on the Freeh report which basically was a PSU Board of Trustees' attempt to buy a scapegoat. Please consider adding a more relevant report "The Paterno Report" produced by Dick Thornberg and individuals like Clemente who have prepared a report more substantial than Freeh's slanderous fit against Joe Paterno. I appreciate the fight for justice and not where money can place blame. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.92.92.66 (talk) 16:00, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
- The best place to make this request is here. Chances are nobody here at the help desk is very familiar with the details of these different reports and so it's hard for us to make a good determination regarding their relative reliability. The other editors at the Joe Paterno talk page will be much more familiar with the topic and can help you make appropriate changes to the article. Good luck. -Thibbs (talk) 23:28, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
- 72.92.92.66, Misplaced Pages articles must never take sides. Article content is required to be completely neutral, reliably-sourced, and worthy of inclusion. Also, articles must give due weight to different sides of contentious issues. Therefore, your clearly biased views on the Paterno issue have no place in the article. For the record, the article includes content about his family's investigative rebuttal to the Freeh report. However, it certainly can be expanded. --76.189.111.199 (talk) 23:50, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

Please add ROBERT COTTINGHAM as a notable people of NEWTOWN CT.
ResolvedHi there, I grew up in Newtwon CT. and after looking up the info written about Newtown on Misplaced Pages, I noticed under the "Notable people" section, that the list is missing Robert Cottingham (who happens to be my dad).
There is a[REDACTED] page written for him which explains "He is considered to be one of most important original Photorealist painters." Robert Cottingam and my mom Jane Cottingahm have lived in Newtown Connecticut for over 35 yeas. They still live on the same property...Blackman Farm (founded in 1758). Some of the barns are converted into studios. Robert is still an active painter and is very much an influence in the art world today.

Information about an article meeting the notability guidelines for wikipedia
Hello thanks for your help, I see that the picture I donated has shown up on the wiki article I am writing you about. I work for the company that represents Oryn the Rebel the american rapper out of Boston, it says that his article is an orphan and may not fit the music guidelines I would like to introduce articles that prove some of the musical accomplishments written about in the article Oryn the Rebel here is a link to the record "Underground heat volume one" http://www.rarehiphop.com/mixtapes_details.php?id=1 Oryn the Rebel produced this record along with Grand Master Caz ] featuring artist such as Freeway ] on number 14 and artist Shock G ] on number 18 of the Underground heat volume one mixtape. Please note that Oryn the Rebel is also known as Oryn the rebel, O-ry-n, O-ry-n the rebel, and oryntherebel his other records can be found at the following links http://www.icuentertainment.net/#!oryn-the-rebel/crkr http://soundcloud.com/oryn http://www.last.fm/music/oryn+the+rebel http://www.datpiff.com/Oryn-the-rebel-The-Best-Of-A-Rebel-mixtape.361533.html https://itunes.apple.com/dk/artist/oryn-the-rebel/id473529967
please let me know if this is sufficient to prove the musical accomplishments of Oryn the Rebel and have the article removed from orphan status and or have it meet the musical guidelines of Misplaced Pages thank you for your help173.48.241.46 (talk) 19:23, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
- To "de-orphan" an article all you need to do it to create incoming links from other pages. That is, you need to edit other pages and create a link from them to the orphan article. This link will show what articles are currently linked to Oryn the Rebel. As long as there is a minimum of one incoming link from another actual article, you can simply remove the "orphan" tag at the top.
- To establish notability is a bit more difficult. You'll need to provide multiple "reliable sources" that discuss him and include them in the article. Right now I see a New York Times link and that's a good start. You'll need more of these high quality sources to establish that the subject of the article is notable. The notability and orphan tags at the top of the page at Oryn the Rebel have important links inside them that can help you understand how to provide proper sources. -Thibbs (talk) 23:22, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

Banda (opera)
(Also posted on Talk:Rigoletto)
Rigoletto#Instrumentation includes "banda", with a redlink to Banda (opera). I've just been looking for what is meant. "Banda" is Italian for
- Band (in all senses); banner; company, crew. — civica, municipal band.
- (Cassell's Italian Dictionary, 1967)
I have started a draft article, Thnidu/Banda (opera), which so far is barely even a stub but does have one offhand reference. I would appreciate any elaboration, especially by someone who knows the territory.
I have been looking for a more exact forum to post this in but without any success. List of musical ensemble formats looked promising but is minimal.

Video in gallery
2013 Russian meteor event includes a video in a gallery. Clicking on it causes it to run the video but their doesn't seem to be a way to get to the image page. Is there a way to add a link like the icon in the regular video thumbnail? Rmhermen (talk) 22:46, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
- I created a template for this, which currently is at User:Toshio Yamaguchi/Template:Video link with thumbnail. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 23:15, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
- It doesn't show a thumbnail from the actual video, though, just a generic thumbnail I chose for this. I am not sure whether for most videos on Misplaced Pages showing a thumbnail from the actual video is really needed in the cases where a link to the video is to be provided such as you intend. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 23:26, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

- (edit conflict) It looks like the "Neutrality Disputed" tag was placed on the article nearly 2 years ago. But the citations were just added a few minutes ago. Also the citations only cover one of the three "Citation Needed" flags. After you've introduced sources to cover the other two claims then I think it would be OK to remove the "Neutrality Disputed" notice. -Thibbs (talk) 00:14, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- Thibbs, the tag is solely about the neutrality of some of the section's language, which is unrelated to the recently added cites. As I said in my prior comment, the editor did the correct thing by posting in the existing thread on the article's talk page. This matter is therefore resolved. --76.189.111.199 (talk) 00:27, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- I disagree that language choice was the central issue here. If you look at the original edit that placed the "Neutrality Disputed" notice, you'll see that the editor who placed this notice simultaneously tagged three separate lines as "citation needed". I think it's most likely that the editor who placed the "Neutrality Disputed" tag was equally concerned with the lack of citation for all three lines. Indeed this is reflected in the talk page post he made. At any rate finding citations for the two remaining "citation needed" claims or alternately removing the claims from the article would seem to cover the most likely root of the problem and couldn't hurt. -Thibbs (talk) 00:40, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- Thibbs, you can discuss the matter on the article's talk page. While citation needed tags were added, there was also a separate neutrality issue with some of the content that still exists. We've addressed Computer998877's comment, so no further discussion is necessary from the help desk's perspective. --76.189.111.199 (talk) 00:55, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- Again, I disagree that the "citation needed" issue is separate from the "neutrality disputed" issue here. All evidence points to the contrary. Applying proper sources where indicated by the cn-tags will fix any neutrality concerns. This isn't a content issue, it's an explanation of how to interpret NPOV tags. If you're unclear on the difference between help concerning content (like a discussion over the Paterno family's investigative rebuttal to the Freeh report) and help concerning how to use Misplaced Pages (like how to interpret cleanup tags) then please feel free to contact me at my talk page where I can elaborate without cluttering up the Help Desk. -Thibbs (talk) 06:06, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

Agnosticism
ResolvedI have a problem with your definition of Agnostic. I was seven years old when I accepted the definition as my belief. That was 45 years ago and at that time the definition I read and took to heart said that an agnostic was a person who BELEVED in a Higher power ( something higher than Human) but did not believe in or condone any organized religion. Later in life a Phd in theology explained to me that that was then in fact my religion, which I couldn't argue with but which doesn't change the fact that I self describe myself as "Agnostic" defining it as a person who believes in a higher power but not in organized religion. If Misplaced Pages doesn't define my belief structure as agnostic, then what would Misplaced Pages define it as?
P.S. I believe Jesus could be defined as Agnostic if it weren't for the fact that he didn't believe in a higher power, he claimed to have personal knowledge of its existence. I believe Jesus lived (Human), I don't presume any relation he claims to of had with any diety. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.252.200.32 (talk) 00:28, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, we can't discuss article subjects here. The help desk "is only for questions about how to use or edit Misplaced Pages". Feel free to discuss the matter on the article's talk page if you have any suggested content changes for which you have reliable sources. However, per WP:TPG, please keep in mind that "talk pages are for discussing the article, not for general conversation about the article's subject. Keep discussions focused on how to improve the article". Good luck! --76.189.111.199 (talk) 00:34, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, published reliable sources are critical to Misplaced Pages. I have never seen a source which used your definition, and lots which use Misplaced Pages's definition, so I don't think you would get support for a change. I don't know whether there is a term for your belief. That question would belong at Misplaced Pages:Reference desk/Humanities. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:55, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

why has mad bot deleted my article
I spent hours creating a page about my great grandfather which you have now deleted,MADBOT wahtever that is. some computer program no doubt|?? and there is no body else even called his name let alone being defamed or whatever, I HAVE GENEROUSLY DONATED TO YOU IN THE PAST AND FEEL extremelly let down to be treated in this way. and[REDACTED] has gone down in my estimation as result and now has no credibility. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thorp12 (talk • contribs) 03:34, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- The message from User:MadmanBot is a little confusing, but I think it's saying that you tried to recreate a deleted article without making changes to address the reason it was deleted in the first place. The article Bernard Andrew O'flynn was speedily deleted by User:Jimfbleak due to the criteria at Misplaced Pages:CSD#A7. If you disagree with that deletion, you can leave a message at that user's talk page. RudolfRed (talk) 03:46, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- Thorp, you should fully educate yourself on Misplaced Pages's conflict of interest guidelines, which explain that "you should not create or edit articles about yourself, your family or your close friends". Therefore, you should not attempt to re-create an article about your great grandfather. Also, the guidelines instruct that if you are participating in an article in which you have a conflict of interest, you should disclose it on both your user page and the article's talk page. Good luck. --76.189.111.199 (talk) 05:03, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- @76.189.111.199: The guidelines do not so instruct as you assert: "Also, the guidelines instruct that ...". In fact, the guidelines (currently) say
COI editing is strongly discouraged. Editors with COIs who wish to edit responsibly are strongly encouraged to follow Misplaced Pages policies and best practices scrupulously. They are also encouraged to disclose their interest on their user pages and on the talk page of the article in question, and to request the views of other editors. If you have a conflict of interest, any changes you would like to propose that might be seen as non-neutral should be suggested on the relevant talk page or noticeboard.

- Senra, I provided relevant information which was intended in a friendly manner. I'd suggest you re-read your own comments to see a much more applicable example of biting. The bolding and excessive wikilinking can be considered shouting and, therefore, uncivil. I'm sorry you objected so strongly to a single word (instruct), but I would have been happy to change it had you requested it. Perhaps I could've used a term that was more accurate. In any case, this issue was rather simple: Thorp created an article about his great grandfather and the guidelines say that "you should not create or edit articles about yourself, your family or your close friends". Pretty straightforward. In terms of the rest of the COI guidelines, anyone can of course read the full text for themsselves if they so desire. I chose to allude only to the ones which I felt were most relevant to Thorp so that he wouldn't be unnecessarily flooded with information. --76.189.111.199 (talk) 05:34, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

reference page numbers
Is there a way to specify a reference and assign it a name, and then use it multiple times, each time with a separate page number? Or do I have to repeat the entire reference, with only the page number changed? PAR (talk) 06:15, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- Look at the examples here: Help:References_and_page_numbers. I think the rp tag or the sfn method would do what you want. RudolfRed (talk) 06:24, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- Basically, you can use a References/Notes approach. The References section contains book information, for example, in Template:Citation. the Notes section can link/refer to the book in the Reference section and the page number listed in the Notes section can link to the Google book page showing the sourced information. See this article for an example of the References/Notes approach. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 11:38, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
Problems searching multimedia
I am trying to add pictures to an article and using the advanced search multimedia setting but no pictures come up and the message: "There were no results matching the query." appears. If I try refreshing the search, the pictures can come up some of the time. Could this be a poor internet connection?, too many people on Misplaced Pages to ask for pictures (be that pictures are a lot of data)?, or did one of my roommates somehow blacklist this computer by trolling or doing some kind of mischief? Biobrit (talk) 06:24, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Biobrit. Are you searching Misplaced Pages for images? Could you possibly give an example of an article you would like to add an image to? That would give a start on answering your question. --Shirt58 (talk) 09:18, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- Yeah I noticed that yesterday. Most of the time it finds nothing I'm looking for. I did some searches on "margaret court" and "ken rosewall", tennis players whose images I uploaded awhile back. margaret court seems to find nothing for me and ken rosewall finds some pics the first search, but if i re-search for 50 images it finds nothing at all. Wikimedia Commons search has the same problem right now and is very frustrating as i know there are a bunch of pics that I uploaded. Fyunck(click) (talk) 09:48, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

On the trolling suggestion 1 I find it unlikely and 2 wouldn’t Misplaced Pages make some accusation of ill will coming from this computer?Biobrit (talk) 07:21, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Picture Sizes in Galleries
Wherever there are pictures on Misplaced Pages organised as "galleries" they are a bit small for me. Obviously I don't want to edit the pages involved every time, but is there something I can do (e.g. in my preferences) to make them appear bigger, by default, just for me. AndyJones (talk) 12:44, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- No. The template "{{Gallery}}" image sizes cannot be changed using preferences. The size of images in the gallery default to a maximum of 180x180 pixels unless modified by the person creating or editing the gallery. Your own user preferences can affect the display of other non-gallery images on Misplaced Pages. For example adjust your preference settings
Preferences->Appearance->Image Size Limit
(320x240px–1280x1024px default=800x600px) andPreferences->Appearance->Thumbnail Size
(120px–300px default=220px)

List of Jewish Actors
About your Lists of Jewish Actors and Jews in Sport. You have to understand something a Jew is someone with a Jewish mother, regardless of the father. If you have a Jewish father and a non Jewish mother, they are not Jews, some may consider them half Jewish. If you had a list of Italian actors you wouldn't include half Italians now would you. But Jews don't think there real Jews unless your mum is Jewish. It comes from your mothers side. Strictly! So I think you need to change all your Jewish Lists of people to only ones with a Jewish blooded mother. And why do you have a list of Jews in industry anyway. Are you trying to make a point? I think you are? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.190.250.123 (talk) 12:59, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- The issue you mention has been widely discussed multiple times in the past over many years and probably will be in the future. Also, there is no "You" in Misplaced Pages as in "Are you trying to make a point? I think you are?" - Much of what you wrote is the viewpoint of some (not all) people. You might want to read Who is a Jew? to discover the others. There are other viewpoints. Talk:Adam Yauch § Request for comment is one such large-scale discussion on the subject. Personally, I don't like the religious/cultural categories, either. Throughout history, such lists have almost never been used to benefit the subjects. —— 18:16, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

ResolvedIs there a template to tag a maintenance category for files that advices not to add files to that category manually and where I can indicate how files are being added to that category? -- Toshio Yamaguchi 14:15, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- I've seen this kind of thing done using category headers mainly. For example, Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Mississippi/Article alerts/Header includes a warning not to manually edit the list and it's transcluded in this page. You might be able to model something similar based on these pages. -Thibbs (talk) 15:09, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- I think I'll leave that categories I had in mind as is for now. It's probably not that important. Thanks for the links anyway, I do appreciate them. I might get back to it at a later point. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 18:08, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
How to join WikiProject Singapore?
I thought about joining Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Singapore. How can I do this? Or can't this project be joined like other WikiProjects where I just add my name to a list of participants and add a userbox to my userpage? -- Toshio Yamaguchi 15:06, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- You may have noticed that there is no direct Wikiproject Singapore project page. The link you provide above actually is a redirect to Misplaced Pages:SGpedians' notice board. There does not appear to be a list of participants on that page like some Wikiprojects have, but there is {{User WP Singapore}} which will add you to Category:WikiProject Singapore members. Given that only four people use the template and are in the category, it looks like it's not well recognized.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 15:56, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

How to edit a page?
how can i post or edit on Misplaced Pages? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dalton Wienhoff (talk • contribs) 18:05, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- Well, in general just as you did when you edited this page: Click the Edit tab at the top of any page and enter your post or the changes you want to make into the edit window. You can click Show preview below the edit window to check whether your edit does what you want to do (note that the edit won't get live at that point). If not, simply make any changes necessary. If the edit looks good, click Save page and the edit will be saved. As a note, it is sometimes considered a good practice to leave an edit summary in the field below the edit window (see Help:Edit summary). For more information, you might also want to check Help:Editing and Misplaced Pages:How to edit a page (concise). -- Toshio Yamaguchi 18:17, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- Also it is considered good practice to sign your posts when posting a comment to a talk page. You do this by simply typing four tildes at the end of your post like this: ~~~~
- Help:Using talk pages covers everything one needs to know about talk pages. Note that only edits to talk pages should be signed, not edits to articles. Note that, for that matter, this Help desk also counts as a talk page. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 18:25, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
Procedure for referring to a person who appears on Misplaced Pages, but in another language
I'm preparing a biographical article in English on Pierre Schwartz whose descendants Pedro Schwartz and Juan Schwartz Díaz-Flores are the subject of biographical articles in the Spanish version of Misplaced Pages. Is there a way to attach a link toward the Spanish articles when their names appear in the English one?Lisaby 20:02, 17 February 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lisaby (talk • contribs)
- Use the :es: prefix for the Spanish Misplaced Pages, so ] for es:Pedro Schwartz. Note that it does need the leading colon, or else otherwise it would treat it as an interwiki language link for the article where you are inserting the link. - David Biddulph (talk) 20:18, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- Well, you'd really want to pipe that link into ] (which shows as Pedro Schwartz), wouldn't you? At any way, that's how those links are created. If the use is for within the article space, though, I generally prefer the redlinked way, as redlinks tend to shout "Hey, I'm about someone notable! Create me!" To do that, just use ] (which shows as Pedro Schwartz). – Philosopher 04:48, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- If you want to pipe you can shorten the syntax and use the "pipe trick", so ] gives Pedro Schwartz. You can, if you wish, combine the redlink and interwiki links, as shown at Help:Interlanguage links#Inline interlanguage links. -David Biddulph (talk) 05:09, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Antipsychotics
You have some horrible material on this page about Antipsychotics, including brain shrinkage and lower mortality and bad for heart. No psychiatrist on the planet thinks that and believes that. And they should know. You scare people because lots of people take them including me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.190.250.123 (talk) 23:06, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- Whether or not the material in the articles scares people like you isn't really something Misplaced Pages is concerned about because this is not a censored encyclopedia. But it is supposed to be an encyclopedia based on reliable sources, so the claims that are made in these articles need to be properly attributed and are subject to removal if they are not properly sourced. The claim about brain shrinkage in the article, for example, seems to have a "citation needed" tag next to it. This means that if no reliable source for this claim can be located then it should be removed. I'm not sure where you see the claims about reduced mortality and heart problems, but if these claims do not have sources then you can edit them to affix "citation needed" tags. -Thibbs (talk) 23:54, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
- I removed the unsourced sentence about brain shrinkage from Antipsychotic. The phrase "possible increased mortality (death)" had a source. I did not find "bad for heart". -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 09:17, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

- The fifth from the left is not wearing a clerical collar nor glassses. Maybe you are counting differently. Counting from the right is more difficult, it is not clear how many photographers to include. Maproom (talk) 08:14, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Removing Table Of Contents
Hi, is it possible to make sections of an article not appear in the table of content's? If you click here you will see the table of contents includes what is inside the 'This is the title text' box. How can I get the table of contents to exclude what is in the box?--Dom497 (talk) 04:11, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- What you'd want is a "magic word", and I don't see anything like this at Help:Magic words. Nyttend (talk) 04:19, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- So is it possible to get one added?--Dom497 (talk) 04:21, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- You could fake section headers so they would not be recognized in the table of contents. For example:
This is not really a section header
- though it look like one, huh? Also, if you use a lower level section header, say three equal signs, you can hide it from display using {{TOC limit|2}} --Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 06:21, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- Although that has the weakness of missing an link. I don't believe magic words can be added by us, since it's a software thing; you'd have to ask the developers for that. I think doing that requires you to file it as a bug with Bugzilla. Nyttend (talk) 12:42, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- I was edit-conflicted out of mentioning "TOC limit" yesterday, but I think that's the ideal solution here. "TOC limit" does not result in a missing link. Its only effect is on the visual display of the TOC. -Thibbs (talk) 15:11, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

- My personal view on TOC_limit is that if you have to use it the article has far too many levels of subheadings. For most articles sections with two levels of subsections should be sufficient, otherwise it gets confusing and messy.--ukexpat (talk) 15:29, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- In this case it would being used to hide material from the TOC, though. There's no reason the page has to be confusing or messy. In the scenario I'm imagining, the deeply subsectioned portions would only be used as anchors for linking and wouldn't show up on the TOC. There needn't be any more than a handful of subsections including the deep ones. -Thibbs (talk) 15:34, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Hello, I was reading the page about Quinton Kynston school and there is a factual error. I was a very un-willing pupil there from 1964 untill I walked out in 1969. The headmaster listed left at christmass 1964 and his deputy, Caterling took over. He was head when I waked out in 1969. We had no school uniform and it was not a tecnical, it was just a school. I am sorry that I am doing it this way. In the 44 years since then I have become a Grade 3 Serial Epileptic with PTSD from my service as an attendant at the House of Commoms. - I assume you're talking about the articlle Quintin Kynaston Community Academy? That says the school became a Technology College in 2001, long after your time there. That appears to be correct according to the sources cited. If you have other concerns about the article, you should raise them at the article's talk page. - I think the factual error OP wants addressed is that Caterling was headteacher from 1964 until at least 1969 and the Misplaced Pages article does not say that. I'll see if I can find any sourcing that will all us to add that to the Quintin Kynaston Community Academy article. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 08:30, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- A quick search online google archives, official website did not turn up anything. The information is old, so it might not be online and Caterling might not be spelled correctly per OPs initial post. It would help to have a first name of Caterling. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 08:44, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- I've had a quick look through the school history page here but sadly it doesn't go into that amount of detail: it names names, but not all of them. I'm not sure how this can be taken forward. It's particularly awkward because of the merge and name changes. If I find anything (frankly not that likely) I will report back. Best wishes DBaK (talk) 08:55, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

- Even if someone else wrote the article, the subject (your business) would still need to be notable enough to warrant an article. For businesses, the notability standards are at WP:CORP. Can you say that your business meets these qualifications? Thanks, Dismas| 11:38, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
Different Person
Hi
I have modified a date on[REDACTED] and I want to add the respective reference page; but I am not able to...
Kindly advise. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Josephmaan (talk • contribs) 09:36, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- You seem to be referring to Michel Aoun. I have no idea what tayyar.org is but considering that Aoun was an officer with the Lebanese Army, I'd tend to believe them when they say what his birth date is. Therefore, I have reverted your changes which, by the way, also broke a template at the bottom of the page. As for references, please see WP:Referencing for beginners. Thanks, Dismas| 11:04, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
changes on page of 1(German/Netherlands) Corps
I have just updated / corrected info on 1 (German/Netherlands) Corps. There are several boxes, though, that I do not manage to correct. The same applies for the profile text, which does not read our correct unit's name. It should be 1(German/Netherlands)Corps. Could you pls advise me how to do this.
Thx in advance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chiefpublicaffairs (talk • contribs) 10:13, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Pictures
How do I create a picture with the caption in the centre at the bottom of the image and the list underneath (birth name, birth place so on...) and what is the text or coding I would have to use? RVvDtink (talk) 11:28, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- You seem to be referring to an infobox. You can find more info about infoboxes at that link. Which infobox you use is going to depend on what you're writing about. For instance, if you're writing about a person, you might use Template:Infobox person. But be aware that there are special infoboxes depending on the occupation of a person such as models, athletes, etc. Dismas| 11:31, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
i do not know how to edit a headline
i went to a site to find the results of the 2012 general elections in bermuda. the headline is bermudan general elctions. the correct spelling of the adjectival form of bermuda is bermudian. that is, there is an "i" in the adjectival name. (just like a person from canada is called a canadian; not a canadan.)the content of the article has the correct spelling. how do i edit the headline? Aminorsbda (talk) 13:29, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- When you say that you went to "a site", do you mean one of the articles here at Misplaced Pages? Are you referring to the title of the article, i.e. what is displayed in big bold letters at the top of the article? If so, then the article must be moved to its correct spelling. It would help greatly if you told us which article you're referring to. Dismas| 13:35, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- I agree that the article should be renamed, as the articles Bermudian dollar and Bermudian pound also use Bermudian rather than Bermudan and the infobox at Bermuda also gives the demonym as Bermudian. Maybe all articles in Category:Elections in Bermuda should be renamed in this fashion. You can rename an article by simply moving it to the new title as pointed out by Dismas. You can do it yourself if you like, but if you do, be prepared to explain to other editors why you are making this change. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 13:43, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- No User:Aminorsbda cannot move the article themselves, as they are not WP:autoconfirmed - Arjayay (talk) 15:20, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- There are a number of pages that will need to be moved if this is accepted; I'd suggest filing a move request for all of the in one place (maybe Talk:Bermudan general election, 2012). Whilst "Bermudian" seems to be preferred by inhabitants of Bermuda, "Bermudan" is widely used in English and may be the more common spelling. Yunshui 雲水 13:50, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- The most commonly used is irrelevant. Under WP:ENGVAR, this clearly falls under the subsection "Strong national ties to a topic" (WP:TIES) so should use the English of that nation. - Arjayay (talk) 15:42, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- For the curious, OED: "Bermudian adj Of or pertaining to the Bermudas or their inhabitants. Bermudian rig n. a rig for a yacht, carrying a high tapering sail, called a Bermudian mainsail. So Bermudian-rigged adj., fitted with a rig and sail of this kind" and "Bermudian n. An inhabitant of the Bermudas; a Bermudian ship; a Bermudian-rigged ship." whilst (confusingly) The Times Style and Usage Guide (2003): "Bermudian, not Bermudan; but a Bermudan-rigged boat" --Senra (talk) 16:00, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- Even curiouser, many adjectivals are formed by the suffix -ian such as Lancastrian (from Lancashire), Mancunian (from Manchester), Novocastrian (from Newcastle) and, erm,
YorkieYorkshireman (from Yorkshire). Bermudan would be odd in {{British English}} --Senra (talk) 16:16, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- Just as a comparison, a google search of bermudian on site in .bm gives 239,000 hits, bermudan less than 2000. I'm good with a change in the article names.Naraht (talk) 21:47, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Netaji Palkar wrongly edited - Died information
Hello,
Just wanted to let know team that information of Netaji palkars death is wrongly edited. there in no such district in Karnataka "Raigad". it in Maharashtra. Request you to confirm and change. below is the Link of ur page where mistak is done. Please go to below link and correct the mistake.
Thanks and regards, Ravindra Kumbhar. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.94.20.7 (talk) 17:27, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you for pointing this out. All the information in the infobox was added by an anonymous user about a year ago, and as you say the place of death seems to be nonexistent. As I haven't found a reference which mentions his place of death, I have simply removed it.
- Misplaced Pages is the Encyclopaedia that anybody may edit, so you could have removed it yourself; or even better, if you have a reliable source which gives the correct place of his death, you could add that. In fact, if you have reliable sources for any of the information in the article, you could add citations, as the article is woefully lacking in references.

Regarding, Jonathan Smeeton, British Lighting Designer. Which just so happens to be myself.
I'd rather like to apply a picture (head shot) And update the currently working information and something more in the worked for item. Just so happens to be Diana Ross, loads of theatre, Babyface and soon Beatlemania in Spain. How do I go about this? Can you help please.
Best regards, Jonathan Smeeton. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Smeeton (talk • contribs) 21:30, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- Hello, Jonathan, and thanks for asking. The answer is in two rather different parts.
- With regard to a photo, Misplaced Pages is always glad to accept photos which are relevant to articles; but be aware that in order to be used a photo must be either public domain or explicitly released by the copyright owner under a licence compatible with Misplaced Pages, allowing the material to be used for any purpose, commercial or not. See WP:Donating copyright materials for more information.
- With regard to the content of the article, the situation is a bit different, because of the requirement that all articles are required to be written in a neutral tone and not promotional: people who are close to the subject, because of their conflict of interest, are likely to find it hard to write in an acceptable way. While we would welcome your suggestions for how the article might be improved, you are strongly discouraged from editing the article yourself, and should instead make your suggestions on the article's talk page, for uninvolved editors to decide what changes to make in the article. You should also be aware that, particularly for biographies of living people, all information in the article should be referenced to reliable sources, independent of the subject: material from your own knowledge, or private archives, is not acceptable unless it has appeared in a published reliable source. --ColinFine (talk) 23:52, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- I would also point our that the Jonathan Smeeton article currently lacks any independent references – the only reference is to his own website. Without third-party references that establish its subject's notability, the article is in danger of being deleted. So, while a headshot would certainly improve the article, Mr. Smeeton could also help improve it by finding a few such references, and mentioning them on the article's talk page so that an independent editor can add them to the article. Maproom (talk) 00:05, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
Excessive copying
I have discovered an editor has been copying and moving text among articles frequently and without attribution. Some material has been moved enough times that I am having problems figuring out the articles from which some content may have originated. Other than warning the editor, what steps should be taken?Novangelis (talk) 21:49, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- Your first step should be to discuss your concerns with the other editor. Their talk page would probably be the best place.--ukexpat (talk) 22:05, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- Then what?Novangelis (talk) 22:46, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- There are some examples of how to fix this problem at WP:CPM. If the other editor doesn't stop doing the copy-paste, and you've warned them about it, then that might fall under vandalism and you could ask they be blocked from editing. But, that should be a last resort. RudolfRed (talk) 23:38, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- If this is about David Hedlund, then Novangelis is, I believe, right to draw attention to the problem. Maproom (talk) 00:23, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

Deficient article
As per the community guidelines for Autobiography, I'm writing about an article about which I'm the subject: Ken Kalfus. The page, which I did not originate, could be more complete, more accurate and more interesting, if anyone wishes to take the trouble. Some suggested revisions:
- I never attended Trinity College. It's true that I don't have a degree; the last school I left, however, was New York University. Reference: http://www.nytimes.com/2003/03/22/books/it-started-with-a-vision-of-tolstoy-s-death-then-segued-into-a-first-novel.html?gwh=1245049D7B4BAD52B1D7CAF68CF3985D
- My first collection of stories, Thirst, is comprised of short stories that I published in literary magazines, including the Village Voice Literary Supplement, the North American Review, and the University of Arizona's Sonora Review, when David Foster Wallace was its fiction editor. References: already cited Salon piece; also, about the Sonora Review: http://www.sideshowmediagroup.com/?p=88
- From 1994 to 1998 I lived in Moscow, where my wife Inga Saffron was the Philadelphia Inquirer's correspondent. (reference: Times article)
- My story "Pu-239" was adapted for film by Scott Z. Burns and starred Paddy Considine, Radha Mitchell and Oscar Isaac. (Reference: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0472156/?ref_=sr_1)
- My new novel, Equilateral, is being published in April 2013. It's set in Egypt at the end of the 19th century; its theme is the search for extraterrestrial life. (Reference: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_10?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=ken+kalfus+equilateral&sprefix=Ken+Kalfus%2Cstripbooks%2C262)
- My wife is now the Philadelphia Inquirer's architecture critic. (Times article)
Please excuse me if I've violated some protocol by making these suggestions. I'm an enthusiastic supporter of Misplaced Pages and would like its article about me to be as complete as possible. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Walesspeed (talk • contribs) 21:58, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- No, these type of *referenced comments* are just fine! However, they *should* be placed on the talk page for the article (Talk:Ken Kalfus), hopefully an editor will take care of it (which will take care of any WP:AUTO issues. If no one has done so in a week, comment here again.Naraht (talk) 23:02, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- No apology necessary: apart from not knowing the best place to put them, these are exactly the kind of contributions with which somebody who is the subject of an article can best help with that article. --ColinFine (talk) 23:55, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
Covario page
Trying to add reference and text, but keep getting error when I add reference. I added ==References== , like it said, and removed <relist/> (not sure what it was. But no luck in correcting this error.
- The {{reflist}} or <references /> tag needs to appear after all the references. There's a reference at the very end of the article. If you move that up, it will work. RudolfRed (talk) 22:32, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
editing the page "Peter Vettese"
I am continually blocked in editing the page "Peter Vettese" or "Peter-John Vettese". The page has incorrect information and is dramatically out of date - I planned to upload with completely new text - but it keeps getting bounced. Please can you advise how to review the page — Preceding unsigned comment added by Violet Lushington (talk • contribs) 22:31, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- First, don't mark edits with the minor edit box unless you're changing something very small like a typo. When someone reverts your changes, instead of putting them back, raise the issue on the article's talk page. See WP:BRD. Also, read the guidance at WP:COI. Some of your edit summaries suggest you might have a conflict of interest. RudolfRed (talk) 22:37, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- Besides the above raised by RudolfRed:
- You cannot replace a cited article with a new version that doesn't contain any reference.
- The new page is completely unformatted whereas the previous page contained correct Wiki formatting.
- Most importantly: You cannot overwrite it with a page that is both advertising and non neutral in tone.
- And to parrot the previous statement: please read WP:COI as well. Excirial 22:42, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- Besides the above raised by RudolfRed:
Wikidata and its impact on English Misplaced Pages
Based on responses to my query here and this signpost report I wish to find "... the current RFC is out there ...". How do I find this "current RFC"? See also Wikidata first steps ... and Wikidata live on English Misplaced Pages --Senra (talk) 22:39, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- I'm not sure where it is. It might have been posted on one of the Village pumps, you could try looking through the archives there. Or ask the user who mentioned the RFC. RudolfRed (talk) 23:34, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
- The quoted signpost comment also says "The first service offered is interwiki links, so it makes sense to look at that issue first." I guess the mentioned RFC is Misplaced Pages:Wikidata interwiki RFC. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:55, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
