A taunt is a sarcastic challenge or insult. "I bet you can't improve this article before I get back, nah, nah.".

Taunts frequently involve remarks such as "Your mom," "I kissed your mom," or "Hey fat-kid." A taunt is a remark or insult meant to solicit a response from the tauntee. Taunts can also be used to cause humor to those hearing it without it being directed at them. A taunt can be taken in a variety of ways although it is meant to provoke the person its directed at. Some may take it good-humoredly but it may start a fight of words or fists between the two parties involved.

The act of taunting can be learned by observation and improvisation. It usually follows linear thought, correlating or building in some manner to the target of taunting. Things such as the victim's appearance, intelligence, mannerisms, education, background, past offenses, etc can otherwise be insulted. The effectiveness of taunting is directly related to the victim's inability to control their emotions and over-vaunted belief of his/her virtue.

Taunts are a genres of Folklore.
