He was born on June 5, 1972 in Wilkin County, Minnesota and raised on a farm near Wyndmere, North Dakota.
Klosterman is the author of three non-fiction books: a humorous memoir/history on the phenomenon of hair metal, entitled Fargo Rock City; a best-selling collection of pop culture essays, entitled Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs: A Low Culture Manifesto; and Killing Yourself to Live: 85% of a True Story, a road narrative focused on the relationship between rock music, mortality, and romantic love.
He regularly contributes to Esquire, and had a column in SPIN Magazine titled "My Back Pages", formerly "Rant and Roll". He was interviewed in September 2005 by ESPN Page 2 writer Bill Simmons in the "Curious Guy" segment. Klosterman began contributing his own articles to Page 2 on November 8, 2005. He went on to receive critical acclaim in Februrary of 2006 for his week-long blog from the Super Bowl.
In early March, it was reported that Klosterman left or was fired from Spin. This came not long after it was announced that editor-in-chief Sia Michel was replaced. A slew of other resignations and dismissals followed.
