March 26

This is a list of redirects that have been proposed for deletion or other action on March 26, 2014.

World's Largest Rosary

There's nothing at the target page about having the world's largest rosary. Searching Google, it looks like it's in the Philippines somewhere. BDD (talk) 23:10, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

  • delete - not mentioned at target. Regardless of where it is, it's likely to be worth redlinking to encourage creation anyhew. WilyD 10:13, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

World's Largest Wind Chimes

There's nothing at the target page about having the world's largest wind chimes. We could retarget to World's Largest Tuned Musical Windchime, in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, but I'd favor deletion. Guinness now recognizes Casey, Illinois as holding this title, so the Arkansas attraction is probably misnamed anyway. BDD (talk) 22:05, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

  • Delete. On an English-language website, random redirects to English-language topics in <insert other language name here> are not useful; they are unlikely search terms. Our database is not an arbitrary translation tool. Other language Wikipedias exist for searching in other languages. — Scotttalk 17:25, 26 March 2014 (UTC)
    • Since this redirect purposefully directs readers to the specific article they're looking for, it's demonstratably not random. It is, in fact, it is the exact opposite of random. Since this redirect is not a translation tool, or in any way related to translation, that statement is a non sequitur. As indeed that it's an unlikely search term - with millions of articles, every term is an unlikely search term. They're kept because they're useful for finding content - if we didn't want readers to find content only findable by unlikely search terms, we wouldn't have a search bar, because only unlikely search terms are ever entered into it. Other language Misplaced Pages exist for providing reference in other languages - no Wikipedias exist for searching. Searching is merely a means to an ends, but one that needs to be facilitated if the content is to be useful. Since all of your statements are demonstratably false, you should reconsider your position, given that you are supporting the deletion of this redirect for no reason whatsoever. WilyD 10:12, 27 March 2014 (UTC)
      • demonstrably not random
Unless our database offers multilingual search results for every single title in our database, then yes, these redirects are random, because they only exist as the result of completely impromptu and piecemeal additions to our database by J. Random Editor.
      • this redirect is not a translation tool, or in any way related to translation
Top tip: if you search for a word in language X and get a result in English, you've just performed a translation. Rather than fighting to keep these completely cack-handed attempts at providing translation through our search interface, you could be of more use voting for my Template:Bug, that proposes an actual, consistent method for multilingually searching our database. And as for this:
      • with millions of articles, every term is an unlikely search term
        Facepalm FacepalmScotttalk 16:18, 29 March 2014 (UTC)
        • Misplaced Pages is a work in progress, though the choice of what's created isn't entirely random, there is an element of chance, sure. But the redirect isn't random, it's purposeful. There's no plausible way to argue it's random. (Unless you're using a homophone of random from a language other than English). Some articles will provide translations (if only through interwiki links), but the purpose of a redirect isn't to provide translation, but to direct readers to the content they're looking for. The redirect isn't being used for translation. Beyond that, yes, I demonstrated how absurd the "delete because it's only used occasionally" position is. The standard for RfD must be implausibility, rather than unlikeliness, because everything would be deleted if the standard was unlikeliness. WilyD 10:04, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
  • Keep - directs readers to the content they're looking for, which is why we make redirects. No one has suggested any reason we might want to alter or delete this, nor can I imagine any. Simple civility requires that we not try to make things more difficult for our readers when no encyclopaedic benefit would result. WilyD 09:55, 27 March 2014 (UTC)
  • Delete this is not the only Carpentaria (disambiguation) on Misplaced Pages, so no utility is given to Russians trying to find information written in Russian. This is a location in Australia, an English speaking country, next to a Malay speaking region, so has no affinity for Russian. -- 70.50.151.11 (talk) 04:12, 28 March 2014 (UTC)

  • Keep - takes readers to the content they're looking for. No reason has been suggested for deletion, nor can I imagine any. Why write an encyclopaedia then bury it? Why be dicks to the readers if we don't have to be? WilyD 09:53, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

  • Keep - directs readers to the content they're looking for, which is the whole point of a redirect. If readers can't find the content, it was a waste of time to write the encyclopaedia, so I don't know why anyone would want to interfere with that process. Since no one has suggested any reason to delete this, nor can I imagine any, keeping is the only reasonable outcome. WilyD 09:52, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

  • Delete in the spirit of WP:Use English (although that guideline applies to names and not redirects) and per WP:What Misplaced Pages is not. As that policy suggests, Misplaced Pages "does not aim to contain all data or expression found elsewhere on the Internet." Since English-language Misplaced Pages pages tend to turn up in searches using outside search engines, this redirect may distract from bg:Бягство от затвора, which is probably what Bulgarian speakers are actually looking for.
