Usernames

Hi Katie. I saw that you got rebuked at WP:UAA, so I thought I could pass along some of my experience on how best to handle problem usernames.

  • No edit history whatsoever - Definitely not material for UAA - we can't admonish them on suspicion alone. If they are an obvious match to a company or organization but have not made any edits at all, then you could leave them a {{uw-username}} warning.
  • Only WP:AFC submissions - The UAA admins won't block these on sight. However if they are an obvious WP:COI, either writing about themselves or something they represent, a {{uw-coi-username}} warning is appropriate.
  • Edits in main article space or user space - These are reportable to UAA and will get whacked with the big hammer.

I hope this helps - it took me a while to understand the procedures. Keep up the good work! --Drm310 (talk) 05:52, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

Deletion contesting

I removed your deletion notice on user talk:Lucreziabonna because it was not a biography.--75* 17:26, 1 May 2014 (UTC)

User:Snowland

Actually, the account exists. It was created in 2006 but has never edited at all. I've taken the page to MfD Misplaced Pages:Miscellany for deletion/User:Snowland as it appears to be a 'hijack'... Your comments would be welcome there. Peridon (talk) 20:16, 1 May 2014 (UTC)

I used this username because it is for a group class project at UW. Will that be okay? My teacher instructed us to do so.

User:FResearchGroup

I do not understand why you need to delete User:FResearchGroup. Please help me understand, what our mistake was.

Since the user account is blocked I use my other personal account to contact you. I am a German linguist working mostly with Sami languages and adding encyclopedic information to relevant articles. I write in different language versions of Misplaced Pages, but at present mostly in German. You can easily check my contributions to Misplaced Pages.

Recently, I opened a new user account at Commons under the name commons:user:FResearchGroup (see the short explanation there). We wanted to use this account for our whole research group to upload media originating from our work. We thought that we could also use this account for writing as a group in Misplaced Pages. Popularization of the results of our research we consider an important part of our professional work. Therefore we do not need to write anonymously, we thought. That is why I provided the link to the project webpage at our university. To let other users know who we are.

If you find this blatant advertisement, please tell us before you block and delete. If these kinds of links are not allowed (we are sorry, be we did not know) we are happy to take it away again.

(talk page stalker) English Misplaced Pages's username policy states that account names can never represent a group of people or an organization, and an account can never be shared between different people. Accounts can only ever represent and be used by a single individual. The rules at Commons appear to be different, which is why I can understand your confusion. I am sorry to say that each member of your group will require their own Misplaced Pages account if they don't wish to edit anonymously. Best of luck. --Drm310 (talk) 18:28, 2 May 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for helping me understand the problem. What I still do not understand is why my account (and even my IP address) is blocked. The username policy states: "administrators should examine the user's edits to decide whether or not to allow them to create a new username Users who adopt such usernames, but who are not editing problematically in related articles, should not be blocked. Instead, they should be gently encouraged to change their username." Since so far it was me (i.e. Michael.riessler) alone who used the new group account and there were no promotional editing done whatsoever (except that I "promoted" my real identity on my own user page), I kindly ask you to give me the opportunity to change my username. In the future I will follow the rules and not share this account with other individuals. Thank you! --Michael.riessler (talk) 19:06, 2 May 2014 (UTC)
Unfortunately I am not an administrator, nor is Katie5584, and it's beyond either of our power to grant your request. You should direct your inquiry to the admin who blocked the account, Jimfbleak. He may provide you with a clearer explanation of why he blocked the account, and grant you an opportunity to submit a change of username. I hope you get a satisfactory resolution. --Drm310 (talk) 20:54, 2 May 2014 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) I left a message at Michael.riessler's talk page to see if we can get this fixed. §FreeRangeFrog 21:32, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

Sorry, but it is up to us--that's what makes us editors, not robotic aggregators of factoids. It's "well-sourced" if by that you mean that there is something that seems to prove that it is true, but "well-sourced" should really mean that it is sourced reliably and independently--if only to determine that it is a factoid worth inclusion, because a secondary source has remarked on it. I'm somewhat surprised you let yourself get dragged up to a third revert on such a minor matter, but I'm sure you won't let that happen again. Thank you, Drmies (talk) 00:47, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

Yes, you're right. I shouldn't have got caught up in it, it won't happen again.Katieh5584 (talk) 09:46, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Mapua Mansion

Hello Katieh5584. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Mapua Mansion, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: A7 does not apply to houses. Thank you. — Malik Shabazz /Stalk 18:55, 3 May 2014 (UTC)
