Original air marshals were United States Marshals and later were specially trained personnel of the FAA. Their mission was to safeguard the aircrft they were on against hijacking and all other forms of crimes. Under the Homeland security Act of 2002 the airmarshals were transferred to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Bureau of the US Department of Homeland Security.
