He is a Polit Bureau member of Communist Party of India (Marxist), and Kerala State Committee Secretary of CPI(M).
He was the Electricity & Cooperation minister in the Left Democratic Front cabinet 1996-1998, from which he resigned in October 1998 in order to take over as the Kerala state secretary of CPI(M) which was necessitated by the death of the then CPI(M) state secretary, Chadayan Govindan.Mr.Vijayan was substitued by S. Sarma in the ministry.
Now Mr.Pinanrayi is under the shadow of controversy over the SNC Lavalin scandal.This scandal is one of the Major scandal in the history of Kerala which cause the government to loss 3Billion Indian Rupees. As the Minister for Electricity, he entered an agreement with Canadian company SNC Lavalin and caused loss.
