Kyra Phillips (born 8 August 1968) is a news anchor for CNN, where she has been reporting since October 1999. She currently anchors Live From..., a live news show based in Atlanta that airs weekdays from 1:00-4:00 p.m. ET. On September 4, 2006, Live From... will be renamed CNN Newsroom, and Phillips will co-anchor the second section of each day's Newsroom with Don Lemon.

Life and career

Phillips grew up in San Diego and received her bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Southern California. Among her first jobs in broadcasting were the positions of weekend anchor and reporter for WLUK in Green Bay, Wisconsin before moving on to WDSU-TV in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1994. Before joining CNN in 1999, Phillips held positions at KAMC-TV in Lubbock, Texas, CNN-Telemundo’s Washington, DC offices and the CBS affiliate in Los Angeles. In her spare time, Phillips is in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America and has been doing so since 1992.

In 1997 Phillips was named Reporter of the Year by the Associated Press. She has also won four Emmy awards.

During her early years at CNN, Phillips gained access to U.S. Navy airwing CAG 9 in 2001 as they prepared for the war in Afghanistan. In January 2002, Phillips spent about a month in Antarctica to work on a television documentary to be featured on the program "CNN Presents". Later in 2002, Phillips produced reports focusing on the U.S. Navy’s reconnaissance missions from the USS Paul Hamilton, the Navy’s Special Operations Command, the Navy SEALs, and Special Warfare Combatant Crewman training, riding in an F-14 during an air-to-air combat mission over the Persian Gulf. She has also participated in the Navy’s TOPGUN school, SWAT training, and other police and weapons training.

In 2003, she was an embedded journalist during the 2003 Invasion of Iraq, where she reported from the USS Abraham Lincoln.

Controversy

On August 29th, 2006, during a CNN broadcast of George W. Bush's speech on the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina (2005), Kyra's microphone was left on while she was apparently in the bathroom, leading to her audio conversation being broadcast over the President's speech (the video showed Mr. Bush's speech only). During the conversation, Phillips reveals information about how much she loves her husband and how hard it is to find a good guy. The unidentified women agrees and talks about how her family is reacting to her relationship, particularly her brother. Phillips then responds "of course brothers have to be protective. Except for mine, I gotta be protective of him. He's married, three kids, but his wife is a control freak!" The conversation continues until a CNN employee enters the restroom and tells Phillips that her mic is on. CNN Anchor Daryn Kagan then interjects and summarizes what Bush discussed during his speech. The video was posted on YouTube and caught fire amongst bloggers. Phillips later apologized for the issue with the microphone.

Kyra Phillips has been accused by liberal commentators for having a conservative view, asking blunt questions to liberal guests to make them defend their viewpoints while generally agreeing with conservative guests.

Some examples of this are:

  • A CNN segment aired on April 21, 2005, in which one of her guests said that research showed that it was "a proven fact" that "children in same-sex couple homes are 11 times more likely to be abused sexually." Instead of challenging the incorrect assertion, she called it a "bold statement."
  • While interviewing House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Phillips was accused by Pelosi of repeating the views of the Bush administration. Pelosi said "if you want to make a case for the White House, you should go on their payroll."
  • Referring to French protests in March 2006 where no one was killed, she said "We cannot ignore these live images coming from France now. All this is quite reminiscent of Tiananmen Square when we saw demonstrators facing the tanks." CNN's Chris Burns told French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy that her comments were "regrettable".
  • Discussing Misplaced Pages on "Live From" on December 5, 2005, Phillips said that the site gave an inaccurate impression of her as "a right-wing commie" because it included criticisms of her alleged conversative bias.
  • On August 29th, 2006, during a CNN broadcast of George W. Bush's speech on the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina (2005), Kyra's microphone was left on while she was apparently in the bathroom, leading to her audio conversation being broadcast over the President's speech (the video showed Mr. Bush's speech only). Daryn Kagan was the anchor on duty at the time, and possibly the person Kyra was speaking to.
