- Antiochus IV Epiphanes decrees that Hellenistic practices be followed by all of his subjects. This decree causes Judas Maccabeus also known as Mattathias, son of John, to raise a revolt in Modi'in. Mattathias is considered the founder of the Hasmonean dynasty.
