Lynde was the center square on the Hollywood Squares, played Uncle Arthur in Bewitched and was the befuddled father in Bye Bye Birdie. He provided voices in a variety of animated cartoons, including that of "Templeton the Rat" in the film Charlotte's Web and "Sylvester Sneakly" (a/k/a "The Hooded Claw") in the animated television series The Perils Of Penelope Pitstop.
Lynde was found dead of a heart attack in bed in his Beverly Hills home. The coroner who examined Lynde's body said he had the heart of an 80-year old. This condition was brought on by years of extreme substance abuse.
Lynde was gay but did not publicize the fact.
