Edcreely caught committing copyvio again.

Lupo,

Edcreely is at it again. You were correct, Theatre design is a copyvio. Compare old document in history and this document: http://humanities.theplace4me.com/Theater/Design%20The%20Elements%202.doc

What can we do about this serial offender?

Ta bu shi da yu 03:49, 18 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Mr Creely (if this is his name) uses altavista.com. When I couldn't find the info on google, I went to Altavista as it does more precise searches. Google, though being the best search engine on the planet, isn't as flexible as this oldie but goodie :-) I hate to tell you this, but I think some of his stuff is more obscure, I'd suggest you remove all his material. I know that sounds harsh, but I'm afraid that he's shown he can't be trusted and we need to stop him contributing to Misplaced Pages.
Now I suppose I should confirm whether I've done copyvio! I've snagged heaps of info from US Govt websites and put it in almost word for word. I was under the impression you are allowed to do this, however I'm not so sure now. Did I do good, or did I do bad? If so I'll let you know the stuff I put in and I'll see if you can help me remove it... though I hope this won't be a problem because the material on U.S. government sites is usually very good! - Ta bu shi da yu 07:28, 18 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Let's not get too excited about this. I'll give him the benefit of doubt and treat these copyvios as newbie errors. He does seem to have some knowledge on theater (see his properly attributed quote at Drama: the book exists, but is out of print, so I am ready to believe that he has a sincere interest and apparently even some valuable knowledge in the area).
Copying U.S. government texts (from *.gov or *.mil domains) is generally fine, but you should attribute the source even for public domain texts. I'm no lawyer, so I don't know if attribution is required by law for PD texts, but I think it's more polite and if one does it, one is on the safe side in any case. I usually put such attributions onto the article's talk page, stating something like "The original version of this article was copied from/is based on the public domain text at URL".

Is this guy for real? He is downright victimising me. I don't have to contribute to this site but I enjoy doing so. To make the claims he does about me shows his utter ignorance and lack of respect for people. In fact, he is close to slander. Do I go and try to deliberately break people's privacy. "Obscure"!!! What would he know? I have been a practitioner in theatre for 25 years and I am completing a research thesis in the area. My earlier entries were innocent mistakes and I have met my promise to you never to include such material again. Do you still want me to contribute to this site because I won't if users like Ta bu shi da yu keep acting like a modern day inquisition.
Edcreely 13:33, 18 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Didn't I tell you it'd be embarrassing if someone found copyvios later? But don't worry too much, it'll be forgotten soon. You had a bad start here, and now it'll take some time until you'll have earned the trust of other contributors. Does that surprise you? Lupo 13:41, 18 Aug 2004 (UTC)
I think this is some sort of frontier game that you're all playing here. Is it really about knowledge or is it some sort of glorified club where people have to go through initiation rites and are seriously slapped over the wrist if they make mistakes? It really is quite laughable. In the real world, the world of genuine people, thankfully they don't operate that way. And your fellow user couldn't get away with the ignorant and mindless comments that he makes. Still, I'm staying. You, at least, have shown some integrity.
Edcreely 13:47, 18 Aug 2004 (UTC)
So "Professor Crawford", is your name really Ed Creely? You wrote "This is my real name" on your user page. Is this really your work?!? - Ta bu shi da yu 14:02, 18 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Ta bu shi da yu, Theatre design is one of his early contributions. There is no need to keep pointing out to him that it was copied from somewhere else. I think we already had such an argument on his talk page, and he seems to have gotten the point. Now please stand back. Lupo 14:24, 18 Aug 2004 (UTC)
OK, understood. - Ta bu shi da yu 14:40, 18 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Ed, this is a diverse community, and not everybody is always polite, partly due to the fact that true persons remain somewhat intangible in Internet communications. But your real-world analogy is flawed: imagine what would happen if a student was caught plagiarizing in his Master's thesis: he would get slapped down pretty hard.
This project is about knowledge, but it also needs to remain legal. Which is why copyvios are pretty high up on the list of things not do here. There are no "initiation rites"—as you like to call them—on Misplaced Pages, but in any community someone who (even unknowingly) does something against the (written or unwritten) laws is bound to get into trouble. See e.g. the fate of Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne (second-to-last paragraph) :-)
Anyway, keep making good contributions, and have fun sharing your knowledge and learning at the same time!

Thanks for the heads up and guidance. I'm still new to this. The content of the "Process Oriented Psychology" article now resides at Process Oriented Psychology/Temp. Is there a simple way to retrieve the text from a history page? I had to cut and paste from a large number of table cells. Thanks. Diogenes 16:21, 18 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Zubeyde Hanim

I left the following in article's talk page, duplicating here:

You are welcome to write to him in English, I have written the URL for his contact info above. I have written to him in Turkish because it is the mother tongue of both of us and looking sincere works better than looking formal in Turkish culture. I told him that if we use this, other people will "freely" change and redistribute it. I didn't use mercilessly or even for commercial purposes, but in Turkish language there is no ambiguity for "freely", it basically means "without limitation". BTW, I am not sure calling this his text is fair, he is the editor, not the author, but he certainly knows English. ato 16:19, 18 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Thanks

I appreciate your help with the article. It's a pleasure doing business with you. May you live long and prosper! Diogenes 18:35, 18 Aug 2004 (UTC)

User:Avnionur's contributions

Hi Lupo, I had noticed User:Avnionur had copyvios on most of his contributions (mainly Provinces of Turkey) and placed the appropriate tag in many of them. It seems though these contribs were one off, since he did not edit any articles later.

I started to rewrite one of the provinces of Turkey at the temp page for Erzurum Province, and I'm embarrassed to admit that I have no idea how to replace the temp text into the article itself. I couldn't find guidelines in relevant pages and it would probably be more appropriate to ask this in one of the help pages, but thought you could help.

Thanks...--leandros 14:21, 20 Aug 2004 (UTC)

The article you wrote at /Temp is now at Erzurum Province. You need a sysop/admin/janitor to do the replacement: one first needs to delete the infringing article, and the move the /Temp over it. Which is what I did a few days back. Thanks for rewriting it, it's way better than the original, copied text! Lupo 08:01, 23 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Thank you Lupo, it will be my mission to complete all 81 provinces the same way (though I will have to spend my entire life I suppose), if only it didn't take so long!--leandros 18:43, 27 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Peter Schreier

Thanks for taking the time to e-mail the author of the copyrighted material. However, if you still have that e-mail, it may be a good idea to post the full headers of the e-mail you recieved because of all the e-mail spoofing issues there are these days. If you have any further questions/comments for me, you can always feel free to leave a message on User_talk:Frazzydee. Thanks for your time, Lupo. -Frazzydee 02:49, 22 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Private e-mail is private, and I therefore generally don't post full headers. I don't even post the true e-mail address, I just tell people where to find it. If you'd like to verify Marijke's reply yourself, I could forward the e-mail to you, but would ask you not to disclose too much of it, either. I verified that the e-mail came from where it was supposed to come, and anyway, somebody intercepting my outgoing e-mail and forging a reply (quoting my original e-mail) is pretty unlikely. Do you have any reason to suspect that a spoof/forgery has occurred? Lupo 08:07, 23 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Ankh-Morpork City Watch message

Hi There,

Sorry, I was just testing the Wiki to see if I needed to create an account before saving. I've enhanced the page a little bit further, but I was basically wanting to fill in a little more (not much I agree!) on the missing entry.

When I have time I'll learn more about the commands, etc and fill in loads of info.

Cheers.

Yo, I've seen that the article did improve somewhat. Happy editing! Lupo 15:03, 23 Aug 2004 (UTC)

speedy delete

Thanks for the message. Yeah, I am an admin, but unfortunately not that active anymore, so I wasn't sure what the current practice is: for an admin to just delete something, or first post a speedy delete notice and then delete. I guess I was just being cautious. - snoyes 13:03, 31 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Oh, I see. Was that a question? :-) Well, speedies are speedies, and may be deleted right away. {{delete}} is just the old {{msg:dtest}}, and intended to be used by non-admins when they find a speedy deletion candidate. (Actually, I use it too, but only when I'm not sure whether something is a speedy and would like a second opinion.) Lupo 13:13, 31 Aug 2004 (UTC)
I'm not sure. ;-) Thanks for the answer. - snoyes 13:51, 31 Aug 2004 (UTC)

King Kedri's Story

Hiya.. nope, never heard a word back from them. And User:Lovanion hasn't been seen for a couple of months now, not since this whole copyright question was raised, basically. I'm not sure what to do about it - maybe all the articles that were copied from Cyan sources should just be deleted. —Stormie 23:37, Aug 31, 2004 (UTC)

I'm inclined to think so, if Cyan doesn't respond. Unless the articles have been rewritten extensively in the meantime. Oh well... 219 contributions to check :-( Lupo 06:49, 1 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Many of his contributions seem to be from . They explicitly say at that "All submissions to D'niPedia/Writers Ring are property of the author who submitted them, and are not to be edited or used elsewhere without their written permission." That makes his contributions copyvios. I'm going to tag them accordingly. Lupo 07:01, 1 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for checking on this. I have begun rewrites of the articles I feel are worth keeping. ] 09:05, 1 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Yes, I've noticed. Lupo 09:23, 1 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Nick Jones

Hi. The article at Nick Jones is indeed patent nonsense cooked up by someone with a great imagination. It has been deleted several times before, once by myself. Keep in mind that there already is an article for every serving member of the Australian Parliament, so if there is a new article created purporting to be about a current Australian Parliamentarian, you know it is fake. :) - Mark 03:50, 1 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Hello

You sent me a message asking me to stop vandelising your pages. I just thought it would be only polite to reply.

The reason we vandelised that guys pages is because he had one of our articles removed.....anyway it was only a joke but sorry anyway.

just submitted a new article on strand theory.....i hope that is more appropriate

laters

Dear 192.149.225.97, unfortunately it is not "more appropriate" because that text is copyrighted by someone else. Your uploading it onto Misplaced Pages constitutes a copyright infringement, and the text will therefore have to be removed. And BTW, you can sign your messages by appending four tildes (~~~~); the software will replace that by your signature and a timestamp when you save the page. Lupo 18:26, 2 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Copyright infringement ? No.

The copyright infringement you refer to is in fact not the case.

I wrote that article and own the website at www.napier.eclipse.co.uk/ferryhill

Dave O'Hara

Well then, I'll send Dave O'Hara an e-mail for independent confirmation. Here on the wiki, anybody can claim to be him... Lupo 09:11, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)
I've just sent an e-mail to ferryhill AT mail.demon.co.uk (the "napier" address given on the website didn't work, DNS didn't find the host). Lupo 09:29, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Besides, the original upload was done by an IP belonging to Norsk Hydro in Norway! Dave O'Hara seems to live in the UK, though! Lupo 09:41, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Fair do's, that's where I work, it's a Norwegian company in the UK (Newton Aycliffe), but I guess i'm going to have to prove it. :-) I'm editing the Ferryhill site now to update the contact information. OK, if you click the Contact Us link you'll find the email address has changed to dave.o'hara AT hydro.com (don't forget to refresh it in your cache).
E-mail's on its way... BTW, you can sign your messages by adding four tildes (~~~~); the software will replace them with your signature and a timestamp when you save the page. Lupo 10:19, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)
