In December 1900, New York City newspaper The Sun published a top-five ranking of the big Eastern elevens.

The football season just closed, while it produced a definite championship eleven in Yale If there could be an official rating now of the leading elevens it would be a case of Yale in first honors without a dispute, for the New Haven eleven beat all comers with comparative ease, as shown by the unusually large scores.
