Reception
Noel Perrin in The New York Times stated that overall the book is "remarkable"; he stated there was "overwriting", and wished that the book had some sort of "plot" instead of solely focusing the narrative on her inner thoughts.
Publishers Weekly described the writing style as "luminous", and that her showing her rememberances with "original immediacy and force" enhances the writing.
Evelyn Small, in Washington Post, stated that with the book, the author "helped usher in the age of memoirs."
