The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Spanish: Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores), also known as MINREX, is the Cuban government ministry which oversees the foreign relations of Cuba. It was established on December 23, 1959, instead of the Ministry of State (Ministerio de Estado) to confront the hostile offensive of the United States.
2025 Memecoin Controversy
In January 2025, the official X (formerly Twitter) account of the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs (@cubaminrex) was allegedly compromised, leading to the promotion of multiple Solana-based memecoins, including $CUBA, CUBA 2.0, and Justice for Cuba Coin. The initial token, $CUBA, reportedly reached a $30 million market capitalization before being rug-pulled, followed by two additional scams within 24 hours. Speculation arose regarding whether the government was directly involved or if the account had been hacked. The controversy sparked the CUBA Community Takeover (CTO), a grassroots movement aiming to reclaim the project and transform it into a symbol of resilience against fraudulent activities in the cryptocurrency space. Following widespread media coverage and community efforts, the Cuban government’s X account was locked, and its involvement remains unclear.
