Matjaz “Matt” Vidmar (born August 30, 1962) is an inventor, technologist, and businessman who is the founder and chairman of Perception Group.
Biography
Early life and education
Vidmar was born on August 30, 1962, in Novo Mesto, Slovenia.He studied economics, IT, and media at Ljubljana University, Slovenia. In 1986, he moved to London to gain practical experience in the media and technology industry.
Career
Vidmar started working at Gold Video Production as a video director in 1987, where he directed the Royal Garden Party for Buckingham Palace in 1988. Later, he joined Computer Film Company (now Framestore) as a team member working on electronic film post-production and computer-generated movie effects.
He founded Connexion Exports in 1991; the company manufactured X-System Alpha-64, 64-bit computer graphics workstations, and servers designed for the broadcast and desktop publishing (DTP) industry.
In 1997, Vidmar launched ON-AIR Systems, which was later acquired and rebranded as OASYS in 2012. The company developed On-Air Channel-in-a-Box TV playout automation server technology, simplifying network TV multi-channel playout automation workflows by utilizing video delivery over IP networks, reducing operational costs. One of Vidmar’s On-Air Systems projects is the design and turn-key construction of the Iraq Green Zone International Broadcasting Center.
In 1999, Vidmar introduced a TV streaming solution, Xtreme IPTV, a turn-key cloud platform for IPTV service delivery. The first commercial installation was launched in Mumbai in 2000. In collaboration with MTNL and BSNL, the project also deployed the first multi-gigabit streaming Content Delivery Network (CDN) with Fast Ethernet broadband service direct to home, earning the NASSCOM First Prize for the Most Innovative Technology. Xtreme IPTV was the original product that introduced the concept of TVCDN (CDN optimized for video streaming).
In 2005, Vidmar founded Vision Group, and in the following year, he established XtremeOVP, a cloud-based broadcasting service. Later, in 2012, Vidmar acquired Fora d.o.o., an IPTV middleware R&D company based in Ljubljana. In the following year, he introduced Perception TVCDN, an end-to-end Unified CDN/OTT/IPTV Platform.
In 2019, Vidmar departed from Vision Group to focus on the internet TV CDN, and the TV-commerce business rebranded as Perception TVCDN. Later, in 2021, Vidmar restructured the business operations under Perception Group, incorporated in Toronto, Canada, with subsidiaries Perception TVCDN in London and Fora d.o.o. in Ljubljana. As of 2024, Vidmar is the group chairman and strategy director at Perception Group and a technology consultant involved in several TV CDN projects.
As of 2024, Vidmar is working on the architecture design of TV CDN infrastructure for TMTG (Trump Media & Technology Group). This private CDN solution will provide a complete media cloud environment to power Truth Social online ecosystem. Phase-1 USA CDN network is already in commercial operation.
