Suggestions

List new suggestions here, under the date the article was created or expanded (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the top. If a suitable image is available, place it immediately before the suggestion. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion; self-nominations are permitted and encouraged.

Remember:

  • Proposed articles should:
    • not be marked as stubs;
    • contain more than 1,500 characters (around 1.5 kilobytes) in main body text (ignoring infoboxes, categories, references, lists, and tables). This is a mandatory minimum; in practice, articles longer than 1,500 characters may still be rejected as too short, at the discretion of the selecting administrators.
    • cite their sources (these sources should be properly labelled; that is, not under an "External links" header); and
    • be no more than five days old (former redirects, stubs, or other short articles that have been expanded fivefold or more within the last five days are acceptable).
  • Articles on living individuals – these must be carefully checked to ensure that no unsourced or poorly sourced negative material is included. Articles and hooks which focus on negative aspects of living individuals should be avoided.
  • Articles with good references and citations are preferred.
  • To count the number of characters in a piece of text, you will need to use a free website like this, or an external software program that has a character-counting feature. For example, if you are using Microsoft Word, select the text from the article page (or, in the case of "Did you know" nominations, this Talk page) – not the edit page containing Wikitext – then copy and paste it into a blank document. Click "Tools", then "Word Count", and note the "Characters (with spaces)" figure. Other word processing programs may have a similar feature. (The character counts indicated on "Revision history" pages are not accurate for DYK purposes as they include categories, infoboxes and similar text in articles, and comments and signatures in hooks on this page.)
  • Suggested facts (the 'hook') should be:
    • interesting to draw in a variety of readers,
    • short and concise (fewer than about 200 characters, including spaces),
    • neutral,
    • definite facts that are mentioned in the article, and
    • preferably cited in the article with an inline citation.
  • Suggested pictures should be:
    • suitably and freely (PD, GFDL, CC etc) licensed (NOT fair use) because the main page can only have freely-licensed pictures;
    • attractive and interesting, even at a very small (100px-wide) resolution;
    • already in the article; and
    • relevant to the article.
    • formatted as ] and placed directly above the suggested fact.
  • Proposed lists should have two characteristics to be considered for DYK: (i) be a compilation of entries that are unlikely to have ever been compiled anywhere else (e.g. List of architectural vaults), and (ii) have 2,000+ character non-stub text that brings out interesting, relational, and referenced facts from the compiled list that may not otherwise be obvious but for the compilation.
  • Please sign the nomination with the create/expand date and the name of the creator(s) or creator and nominator, such as:
    • *...that (text)? -- July 19, 2007 new article by ]; Nom by ~~~~
    • *...that (text)? -- July 19, 2007 new article self-nom by ~~~~

    • *...that (text)? -- Article expanded fivefold on July 19, 2007 by ] and ~~~~
  • Please check back for comments on your nomination. Responding to reasonable objections will help ensure that your article is listed.
  • If you nominate someone else's article, you can use {{subst:DYKNom}} to notify them. Usage: {{subst:DYKNom|Article name|January 22}} Thanks, ~~~~

Is there a more interesting hook than this? This is not interesting enough for DYK, but is he the "first doctor to become elected ___ in Taiwan," or sth like that? --74.14.19.125 (talk) 16:54, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
There isn't any source that says that he is the first doctor to become anything, but how about this:
Many people were physicians before they become politicians. Fahmida Mirza currently on DYK is another one. See also List of physicians#Physicians famous as politicians, which is an incomplete list. --74.14.19.125 (talk) 18:26, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

An ad for Obama's election campaign on Misplaced Pages's front page? Hailed by who? Whose POV was that? --74.13.126.28 (talk) 14:12, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
The quote was from Joe Biden. It might be desirable to change the above to "was hailed by United States Senator Joe Biden as..." so it's obvious the quote was from someone significant. Also a note to any admin who might post this on the main page. The article was put up for AfD several hours after it was started. The AfD would presumably be wrapping up around the same time as this DYK would go on the main page. Obviously it would be good to have a decision one way or another on the AfD (it seems to be heading for a keep) before listing this on the main page - we certainly don't want the AfD box at the top of the article if it's going to be a DYK.--Bigtimepeace | talk | contribs 05:49, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
It doesn't matter, this would be more appropriate as an ITN subject than as a DYK. DYK's generally are not about current events.Balloonman (talk) 05:59, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
I was not aware of that, in large part because there is nothing in the DYK rules which says that DYK articles cannot relate to current events. The only rules mentioned relate to recency of creation (or expansion), size of article, etc. If there is a quasi-policy whereby "current event" related articles are not listed as DYK's then perhaps that should be codified and editors who come to list their work on this page directed to ITN instead (it's quite possibly past the point where this article would be good fodder for ITN). I did not even list this article (though I've worked on it a lot in the last few days), but had I created it I certainly would have done so without giving any thought to the fact that it was about a current event.--Bigtimepeace | talk | contribs 06:27, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
IMO, I think it would be preferable to have this as a DYK with a hook that was less POV (even it's a famous person's POV). Something like "...was the first televised speech given by a US presidential candidate while wearing a duck costume". Well, you get the idea. I am actually a huge Obama supported and was recently quoted in support of Obama by about a hundred major newspapers. I just agree that DYK shouldn't seem partisan. House of Scandal (talk) 20:37, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
An excellent point, and though I did not nominate this I'm a bit embarrassed I did not consider that - the current hook is too POV. Here's an alternative in case someone does want to stick this in the DYK section:
I think that would work and it's merely a statement of fact now cited in the article to Richardson himself. Thanks to HouseOfScandal for pointing this problem out.--Bigtimepeace | talk | contribs 07:59, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
It's not that a DYK can't be related to recent events, but rather that this was such a pivital event that it is more appropriate as a ITN entry.Balloonman (talk) 07:54, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
My last response edit conflicted with yours B-man. I guess I don't know what to do at this point - if it absolutely will not make DYK then I could re-list at ITN (or just drop it), but if it can be listed on DYK I guess I'd just rather leave it here given all the rigmarole. Mainly I just want to stop posting here!--Bigtimepeace | talk | contribs 08:09, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

That's a new suggestion that I didn't realize had been added to the list of suggestions. Perhaps newly-added suggestions should be highlighted for a month or so by placing them in a box at the top of the list of suggestions. I note the suggestion is that negative aspects "should be avoided" and is not a complete ban. Fox has been quite open about his expulsion from Harrow and has given press interviews about it. In any case, the second suggested hook is not negative. — Cheers, JackLee 10:34, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
Length verified; confirming hook fact requires an editor with ODNB access. Daniel Case (talk) 13:44, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
Though the source agrees that the office was generally 'profitable', and that he ended up losing £20,000, neither the source nor the article claim that he had 'anticipated' a profit. How about changing it to something like
Length verified, but none of the cited sources tell me anything about him discovering Clower (and none are at the sentences a reader trying to verify this would like to see them at). The radio station bio says only that he produced Clower's first album. Daniel Case (talk) 13:42, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

I offer two hooks. They could even be combined but as an advocate of short, pithy hooks I think its better to chose one or the other:

Needs inline citations on the fact used in the hook. --Falcorian  06:22, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
I'd suggest it be made clear where he was emperor of. This one threw me for a moment.qp10qp (talk) 03:02, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
I think that's better. But what about "Henry, Latin Emperor of Constantinople"? qp10qp (talk) 03:02, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
No inline references. Daniel Case (talk) 14:49, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
The fact in the hook had a footnote. Please check more carefully next time. Srnec (talk) 05:10, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
The reference there seems to be about Euboea and says nothing about Oberto or Henry. Daniel Case (talk) 14:57, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
  • Although it would be clear to anyone that clicks FISM that these are related to magic, the current hook is probably a little too vague. I'll post a new hook below, but I'll leave the first one. GlassCobra 17:58, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
Way too short, hook fact not cited inline and "only American" aspect not in any of cited sources. Daniel Case (talk) 14:42, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Not long enough (1489 characters excluding filmography, which is a list).
