Taoyuan, officially known as Taoyuan City (Chinese: 桃園市; pinyin: Táoyuán Shì; Wade–Giles: T'ao-yüan Shih; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Thô-hn̂g-chhī), is a city and the county seat of Taoyuan County in the northwestern part of the island of Taiwan. Taoyuan is the gateway of Taiwan: with the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport in the vicinity, and is a 30-minute ride to the capital, Taipei. After the creation of New Taipei City on December 25, 2010, the city of Taoyuan became the most populous county-controlled city in Taiwan, surpassing Banqiao, the former seat of Taipei County and once the most populous county-controlled city since the late 80s.

Geography

Taoyuan is located on the Taoyuan Plateau, contiguous on the northeast to Guishan Township. Nankan River is the major river for Taoyuan flowing from the southeast to the northwest.

Climate

Taoyuan has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification: Cfa) with hot summers and mild winters. Precipitation is high throughout the year, and is generally higher in the first half of the year. Due to the effect of wind from mainland China, Taoyuan is typically cooler than New Taipei despite having a lower latitude.

History

Taoyuan is the native home to the Plains tribes of Taiwanese aborigines. Taoyuan's old name was Taoziyuan (Chinese: 桃仔園; pinyin: Táozǐyuán; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Thô-á-hn̂g; lit. 'peach orchard'), since there used to be many peach blossoms in the area. In 1920 under Japanese rule, the area was renamed Taoyuan Town (Chinese: 桃園街; pinyin: Táoyuán Jiē; lit. 'peach garden town'), and incorporated into the Hsinchu state as a county jurisdiction. After the Chinese Civil War, it was "Taoyuan Town, Taoyuan County". Since 1971, the name has remained Taoyuan City (桃園市).

Education

Within Taoyuan, there are five senior vocational high schools, 12 junior high schools, 23 primary schools, and an intelligence initiation school. Taoyuan is also home to a number of buxibans, or cram schools, which teach additional courses in mathematics, English, sciences, etc. There are also ten universities located near Taoyuan.

Economy

Taoyuan was one the host cities of the Taiwan European Film Festival in 2012.
