In 1920 under Japanese rule, the area was renamed Tōen Town (Template:Lang-ja), and incorporated into Tōen District (桃園郡), Shinchiku Prefecture as a county jurisdiction. After the Chinese Civil War, it was "Taoyuan Town, Taoyuan County". Since 21 April 1971, the name was Taoyuan City (桃園市). And on 25 December 2014, it was upgraded to Taoyuan District.
