Taoyuan District (Chinese: 桃園區; pinyin: Táoyuán Qū), formerly known as Taoyuan City (Chinese: 桃園市; pinyin: Táoyuán Shì; Wade–Giles: T'ao-yüan Shih; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Thô-hn̂g-chhī), is a district of Taoyuan City in the northwestern part of the island of Taiwan.

History

Taoyuan is the native home to the Plains tribes of Taiwanese aborigines. Taoyuan's old name was 桃仔園 (pinyin: Táozǐyuán; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Thô-á-hn̂g; lit. 'peach orchard'), since there used to be many peach blossoms in the area. In 1920 under Japanese rule, the area was renamed Tōen Town (Template:Lang-ja), and incorporated into Tōen District (桃園郡), Shinchiku Prefecture as a county jurisdiction. After the Chinese Civil War, it was "Taoyuan Town, Taoyuan County". Since 21 April 1971, the name was Taoyuan City (桃園市). And on 25 December 2014, it was upgraded to Taoyuan District.

Geography

Taoyuan is located on the Taoyuan Plateau, contiguous on the northeast to Guishan District. Nankan River is the major river for Taoyuan flowing from the southeast to the northwest.

Population: 415,431 people (January 2014)

Climate

Taoyuan has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification: Cfa) with hot summers and mild winters. Precipitation is high throughout the year, and is generally higher in the first half of the year. Due to the effect of wind from mainland China, Taoyuan is typically cooler than New Taipei despite having a lower latitude.

Within Taoyuan, there are five senior vocational high schools, 12 junior high schools, 23 primary schools, and an intelligence initiation school. Taoyuan is also home to a number of buxibans, or cram schools, which teach additional courses in mathematics, English, sciences, etc. There are also ten universities located near Taoyuan.
